Nigeria’s Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) has unveiled an AI-powered corporate registry designed to make company formation faster, more accessible and more secure. The announcement was made at the CAC’s 2026 annual retreat in Bauchi, held under the theme “AI at Scale: Advancing an Intelligent Corporate Registry for Efficient and Trusted Service Delivery.”
According to reports on the CAC’s AI-powered corporate registry, the initiative is being developed with Google and other technology partners. It is intended to move the commission towards becoming an “intelligent economic hub”: a significant development for anyone considering company registration Nigeria or business registration Nigeria.
What the AI Corporate Registry Will Do
The new system is intended to streamline key stages of company incorporation Nigeria and reduce reliance on manual processing.
- Faster registrations: Automated compliance checks could enable eligible applications to be completed within minutes rather than days for company incorporation Nigeria.
- Multilingual support: Entrepreneurs will be able to interact with the system in English, Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo and Nigerian Pidgin. This Google partnership for a multilingual business registry is particularly notable for small businesses and entrepreneurs who may face language or digital-literacy barriers.
- Instant guidance: The AI assistant is expected to provide live compliance support and guide applicants through registration requirements, name searches and document submission.
The objective is not merely to speed up administration. The commission also wants to improve the reliability of corporate information used by businesses, regulators, lenders and investors.
How CAC AI Will Help Fight Fraud
The AI corporate registry is expected to strengthen fraud detection through:
- Automated pre-screening of incorporation documents;
- Detection of duplicate directors and suspiciously repeated information;
- Identification of potential shell companies;
- Analysis of unusual or concealed ownership structures;
- Detection of errors and inconsistencies before applications are approved.
These safeguards should improve the quality of the CAC database and make it more difficult for fraudulent companies or inaccurate records to pass through the registration process.
Data Protection and the Audit Trail
The new system will also introduce an API gateway to monitor data access, encrypt information transmitted outside the platform and create a permanent, immutable audit trail of staff activity. This means that actions taken on company records can be tracked, helping to prevent unauthorised alterations and data tampering.
Reports on the CAC’s audit and anti-tampering system highlights the importance of staff accountability within the registry. The CAC Board Chairman has also assured Nigerians that personal and corporate data will not be misused or compromised. The implementation should operate consistently with the Nigerian Data Protection Act 2023 and existing obligations under the Companies and Allied Matters Act 2020 (CAMA 2020).
What Businesses Should Do Now
For businesses, the new system should mean quicker incorporation, better access to CAC services and more transparent processing. However, faster registration does not remove the need for accurate legal filings.
The CAC’s increased use of automated scrutiny comes as the commission separately moves against approximately 100,000 non-compliant companies over unpaid annual returns and missing person-with-significant-control information. A 90-day period from the July 2026 notice was reportedly provided for affected entities to regularise their records.
Businesses should therefore:
- Keep directors’ and ownership information accurate;
- File annual returns on time;
- Maintain proper statutory records with appropriate company secretarial services;
- Review existing CAC information for inconsistencies;
- Obtain professional advice before making fundamental changes.
